Discover La Crosse Distilling Co.

If you’re wandering through downtown La Crosse and follow the Mississippi River breeze, you’ll eventually land at La Crosse Distilling Co., located at 129 Vine St, La Crosse, WI 54601, United States. The building has that restored-industrial charm-exposed brick, tall windows, warm wood finishes-and it instantly feels like a place where craft meets community. I’ve visited a handful of Midwestern distilleries over the years, and this one stands out not just for its spirits, but for how seamlessly it blends food, drink, and local culture.

The first thing you notice is the energy. It’s relaxed but confident. The menu reads like a thoughtful conversation between Wisconsin tradition and modern American dining. You’ll find cheese curds, of course, but also elevated plates like bourbon-glazed salmon and braised short ribs finished with house-made spirits. During my last visit, I tried their rotating seasonal flatbread paired with a rye-based cocktail. The balance was spot on-sweet, spice, and smoke layered without overpowering the food. That kind of pairing doesn’t happen by accident; it reflects a deep understanding of flavor chemistry and hospitality.

What really anchors the experience is their commitment to grain-to-glass distilling. According to the American Craft Spirits Association, craft distilleries often emphasize local sourcing and transparent production, and La Crosse Distilling Co. clearly follows that philosophy. They use regionally grown grains and distill in small batches. When I spoke with one of the staff members, she walked me through their process: milling the grain in-house, fermenting on-site, and carefully monitoring temperature during distillation to preserve flavor integrity. It reminded me of a tour I once took at a Kentucky bourbon facility, where precision and patience were treated as sacred principles.

The bar program deserves its own spotlight. Their old fashioned-arguably Wisconsin’s unofficial state cocktail-is made with house bourbon and garnished simply, allowing the spirit to shine. The difference is noticeable. You taste the depth, not just sweetness. The Brewers Association has long emphasized how local craft beverage movements strengthen regional economies, and you can see that effect here. The distillery collaborates with nearby farms and suppliers, creating a tight-knit supply chain that supports La Crosse’s local food scene.

Food-wise, the kitchen doesn’t treat the menu as an afterthought. Instead, it complements the spirits. I once brought a friend who usually avoids whiskey, convinced it was too harsh. After sampling a flight and pairing it with their smoked brisket sandwich, she admitted the flavors were far more nuanced than expected. That’s the magic of thoughtful curation. The smoke from the meat echoed the char from the barrels, creating a layered tasting experience that felt intentional and refined.

Customer reviews often mention the welcoming staff, and I’d agree. Service feels knowledgeable without being pretentious. If you’re unsure what to order, they’ll guide you through flavor profiles-explaining mash bills, aging techniques, and cocktail structures in plain language. That clarity builds trust. In an industry where transparency matters, especially with alcohol production and food safety, it’s reassuring to see a team so open about sourcing and preparation methods. While menus can change seasonally and availability may vary, the consistency in quality has remained steady in my visits.

The location itself adds to the appeal. Being in downtown La Crosse means you’re steps away from the riverfront and other local attractions, making it an easy stop whether you’re a visitor exploring Wisconsin or a local planning a weekend dinner. Parking is generally accessible nearby, though during peak evenings you might need a short walk. It’s worth it.

From a broader perspective, craft distilling has grown significantly in the United States over the past decade, with thousands of small producers now operating nationwide. That growth reflects a consumer shift toward authenticity and locally made products. La Crosse Distilling Co. fits squarely within that movement, but it doesn’t feel trendy for the sake of it. Instead, it feels rooted-connected to its community, respectful of tradition, and confident in its craft.

Between the well-executed menu, the carefully distilled spirits, and the thoughtful service, this spot delivers more than just dinner. It offers an experience that feels genuinely tied to La Crosse itself.

  • Stopped a couple times on our La Crosse weekend and had excellent and attentive service both times from Joseph. The Asian spiced Crispy Brussels Sprouts were terrific. The Rye Old Fashioned was in the top 5 all time for me and my wife liked her Nutty Blueberry just as much. Definitely will become a regular stop for us on future trips to La Crosse.

  • Just stopped in to support local businesses and I will say their Rye Whiskey is pretty close to Jack Daniel’s in my estimation but be careful…bit stronger than Jack so you may need some ice enhancement! Very brief but positive interaction with the staff and very good experience overall! Staying in a local hotel at the time but had to give them a whirl! Recommended!

  • Had a great experience at La Crosse Distilling. Fast friendly service, a great beer and an awesome Bloody Mary started our visit. We got the ridiculously good brussel sprouts and a wonderful Nashville chicken sandy. I'd definitely come back next time I'm in town

  • 1st time patron. We were waiting on 2 other people to arrive and sat at the bar. I had a whiskey old fashioned (Wisconsin) sour. I finished that and had a whiskey old fashioned (Wisconsin style) sweet! Both were awesome. My wife had a screwdriver and she liked the in house made vodka so much we brought a bottle home. The Brussel sprouts were case. I had the Nashville chicken sandwich on a Linda’s bakery bun with seasoned fries. She had the burger and fries. The food was excellent. The drinks were outstanding. FYI we were chatting with the bartender and she gave us recommendations for a local breakfast restaurant. All and all an outstanding little place in Downtown La crosse, Wisconsin. Great drinks, great food, excellent staff and the light display down the street.
